Good morning( in my time),

I got office 2010 sp2 in my WSUS. And we are deploying to test users .

We have outlook 2010 and office 2003 installed (management decision) and we are noticing that word 2003 has a problem after the update (it doesn't open word docs ). After repair of office 2003 pro its fixed.

I would totally expect that behavior.

That sp2 is going to 'touch' that Office 2003 and mangle a bit of files
and DLLs thus causing the need for 2003's repair.

Tell management that mixing 2003 and 2010 is going to add patching time.

Back when we upgraded from Office 2003 to Office 2007, I insisted that the
related Microsoft products (Project, Visio, etc.) also be upgraded to 2007.
Additional patching time was the entire reason. When we move to Office
2010, I will do the same.

I agree with Diane that the best practice for each upgraded desktop is to upgrade the entire Microsoft Office suite from 2007 to 2010, per workstation. Otherwise your exposure to product/patching problems and risk of major overtime/extra work is way too high.

We have outlook 2010 and office 2003 installed (management decision)
A different approach would be to point out the limitations of doing this...as I vaguely recall, spell checking and a couple other features don't work in Outlook because it ties into Word, and Word is the older verison.

This may be a bit off topic, but if you copy winword.exe into the "Office14" location, spell check should work again.

http://blog.lanlogic.net/blog/spell-check-in-outlook-2010-not-working/

This worked on Office 2003 and Outlook 2010 configurations for a client of ours, however as Steve mentioned, I don't know what else may not work.

It is even worse.
If you install Excel2010 with Visual basic support besides your office2003 the macro engine of office2002 is upgraded as well.

But that said, unfortualtly IT can not always force to management to do as Diane did.
ALthough we put up a fight, we have to support machines with project2000, office2003, excel2007 and Outlook2010.
(and no, I am not happy about it!!)

Not quite on point:

Information about how to use Office 2010 suites and programs on a
computer that is running another version of Office:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2121447/en-gb
You can install and use more than one version of Microsoft Office on a
single computer. For example, you can install and use both Microsoft
Office 2010 and Microsoft Office 2003 on the same computer. However, we
do not recommend this.

Still looking for the one that indicates when you have some of one and
some of another, things will get paved over.

This depends on how you plan to roll out SP2, but if you do it via a script you should be able to use msiexec to automatically repair Office 2003 after the 2010 SP2 install.

I did a similar thing when I recently upgraded to Office 2013, at the start of the script it would run the following:

echo *** Removing *** Office 2007 Compatibility Pack
MsiExec.exe /X{90120000-0020-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE} /qb

echo *** Removing *** Office 2003...
MsiExec.exe /X{90110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9} /qb

This removed the 2007 Compat Pack and Office 2003. This was mainly because I was getting installation errors on some of the installs (I'd setup Office 2013 to automatically remove old versions but it would often just hang during the uninstall).

I can't test this but the following command should quietly and automatically repair Office 2003:

msiexec /fa \\server\share\Office 2003 Pro\PRO11.MSI /qb

The repair options for msiexec are below:

Repair Options
/f[p|e|c|m|s|o|d|a|u|v] <Product.msi | ProductCode>
Repairs a product
p - only if file is missing
o - if file is missing or an older version is installed (default)
e - if file is missing or an equal or older version is installed
d - if file is missing or a different version is installed
c - if file is missing or checksum does not match the calculated value
a - forces all files to be reinstalled
u - all required user-specific registry entries (default)
m - all required computer-specific registry entries (default)
s - all existing shortcuts (default)
v - runs from source and recaches local package

The repair may cause old, unpatched, files to be copied over so I would run wuinstall.exe at the end of the script so that it patches Office 2003.

echo Downloading and Installing Updates...
"\\server\share\WUInstall\WUInstall.exe" /install /reboot

Not pretty, or nice, but it "should" work :)

As an aside, WUInstall is a small command line utility that allows you to add Windows Update functionality into a script.

You can download it here http://www.wuinstall.com/index.php/en

Most of you have probably heard of it but if you haven't it essentially automates the Windows Update functionality and takes into account any Group Policy settings you have such as an internal WSUS Servers.

It's a godsend, and something I always add to the end of every install script.
